Melbourne’s getting a fleet of ‘art trams’ thanks to this year’s Melbourne Festival. Eight artists have been selected from over 116 applicants to decorate 8 trams running different routes across the city. The project revisits ‘Transporting Art’ an initiative that ran from 1978-1993 and saw a selection of Melbourne’s classic trams repainted by artists including Mirka Mora, Howard Arkley and Jenny Watson (above). Selected artists for these new commissions include Jon Campbell, Brook Andrew, Bindi Cole, and Rose Nolan. Their designs will be launched on selected trams in October this year, to coincide with the opening of Melbourne Festival on the 11th.
