The 6 finalists for this year’s round of the Fourth Plinth commission have now been announced.  Marcus Coate, Hans Haacke, Liliane Lijn, Ugo Rondinone, Mark Leckey and David Shrigley are all in the running, with the two successful proposals set to be determined by the Fourth Plinth committee in early 2014.  Included in this year’s line up is a horse skeleton covered in stock exchange prices (Haacke), a pair of dancing robotic cones (Lijn) and LOL’s personal favourite, a 10 metre high ‘thumbs up’ sculpture by David Shrigley entitled ‘Really Good’. The winning works will go on display in Trafalgar Square in 2015 and 2016 respectively.  Read more about the finalists here.

2013 Turner Prize Finalists Announced

The four finalists for this year’s Turner Prize were announced yesterday.  The shortlist includes Tino Sehgal for his Tate Turbine Hall commission, Laure Prouvost for her diaorama-like installation at Whitechapel Gallery, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye for her first major painting exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery and LOL fave, David Shrigley for his retrospective at Hayward Gallery. Shrigley Subject of UK Retrospective

David Shrigley, 'I'm Dead', 2010

Scottish artist David Shrigley is being given his first major UK retrospective at Hayward Gallery. Opening in February 2013, Brain Activity will feature over 175 new and recent works, many of which have never been seen before in London.  Included is the rather forlorn chap above, a canine counterpart to the feline version he made in 2007, along with photographs, “some bronze bits and bobs” and a jar of toenail clippings.

Hear the show’s curator Cliff Lauson in conversation with David Shrigley here.
