Artist Molly Young is obsessed with Old Master paintings, and one 16th century ‘Cremonese School’ painting in particular. It features an unusual child with a receding hairline (bottom right) that Young purchased following its unsuccessful auction at Sotheby’s in 2014. Since then, she’s been collecting images of curiously expressive characters in (usually inferior/lesser known) Flemish and Cremonese Old Master paintings. This digital collection has resulted in the Old Master emoji “sticker pack”, that allows you to communicate using an array of super expressive heads. The unimpressed dame on the top left would get a workout on LOL’s phone. It me.

“I think of my paintings as one surface after another, each calling for a new decision consistent with what’s actually there. I paint in a state that is half-awake and half-asleep, deeply engrossed within my own mind. Trusting your own instincts is key. You trust that what you’re doing is not just colors and shapes but the construction of something that transcends them. Painting, like music, is its own language, so you trust it and let go.”

The attack took place in Soho, when crazed boutique hotel mogul Vikram Chatwal pulled out an aerosol can and a lighter and attempted to torch the creatures, who escaped with minor burns. Kelly, who is currently seeking a restraining order against Chatwal stated “Anybody who attacks a defenseless animal in my opinion is the lowest of the low.” More here.
Not long now until Adam Curtis’s new documentary film HyperNormalisation is released. The proposition for his latest ‘story’? – the premise that as a culture, perhaps as a species, “we have become lost in a fake world and cannot see the reality outside”. More here.
HyperNormalisation will premiere on BBC iPlayer on October 16th.
Jenny Holzer’s lending her support to Hillary Clinton with a new project commissioned by the presidential candidate. Excerpts from former speeches delivered by Clinton have been digitally projected on to the exterior of the White House in Holzer’s signature scrolling text. Like Clinton and Holzer, I too believe that the rights of women and girls is the unfinished business of the 21st century. You’d think the choice between a self professed “pussy grabber” and Hillary Clinton was a no-brainer…
