Ai Weiwei fronts up with a bond

Ai Weiwei, lodging an administrative review

Ai Weiwei has posted the equivalent of US$1.3 million into a government bank account in order to contest the allegations of fraud made against him by Chinese authorities.  Upon his release (without charge) from detainment earlier this year, officials claimed his company Fake Culture Ltd – in fact legally owned by his wife, Lu Qing – owed US$2.4 million in back taxes and fines.

Ai had until today to make full payment or authorities would hand his case over to police, thus putting his wife (the company’s legal representative) and company manager in danger of arrest.  By supplying roughly half the demanded amount as a guarantee, Ai can push for an administrative review, which, according to his lawyer Xia Lin, they will do as soon as possible.
