Te Tuhi’s billboards have been occupied by poodles. The same poodle in fact, repeated three times and made strange by its garb – a ribbed turtleneck/navy blue cardy combo. The image, entitled CDJ, was lifted from the internet and re-presented as Te Tuhi’s latest billboard commission by Melbourne collective JahJahSphinx.
JahJahSphinx established itself in 2006 as an image-based blog run by a small network of artists and CDJ marks the first time that the group has realised a project outside of cyberspace. The type of picture that pops up in a google image search for ‘funny dogs’ or something equally ordinary, CDJ cleverly straddles art and non-art vernaculars, injecting a welcome element of humour into the suburban landscape.
CDJ, installed opposite Te Tuhi, 13 Reeves Road, Pakuranga, Auckland, until November 6th.
