Female Curator Beaten in Pakistan

Protestors in Karachi condemn the beating of curator Amal Opal

Amal Opal, curator at Nairang Art Gallery in Lahore was allegedly beaten by Pakistani police earlier this month for ‘indecent behaviour’ that included ‘wearing sleeveless clothing and interacting with men’.   Known as a haven for left-wing individuals that are less inclined to observe Sharia law, the gallery was raided by police sent to investigate ‘immoral activities’.  Opal intervened in an altercation between an officer and a lawyer in the gallery cafe and was chastised and beaten for doing so.

Despite a public outcry from human rights groups and local commentators, the officer is yet to be charged.
