Francis Upritchard’s most enticing work confuses the found with the fabricated. She excels in creating objects of indeterminate origin. Such is her Harlequin Lamp in Methusalem, her current show at Ivan Anthony. The little lightshade draws upon the ancient craft of pottery, made strange by the inclusion of a tiny, solemn face. The anthropomorphised shade evokes an almost maternal response. Despite it’s ostensible self-containment, it is as if the lamp must be protected (and, of course, admired).
