If you’re a lowly gallerina like me, you probably don’t have a lot of money to spend on art, so I was delighted to walk out of Anna Bibby‘s Herne Bay gallery in Auckland recently with a couple of little (well, tiny) Martin Popplewell ceramics in tow.
Leg of Lamb isn’t a great fan of his paintings, but Popplewell’s ceramics are something else. They’re playful and witty. The pieces above have an interesting kinship with Crown Lynn kiwiana, particularly their signature swans. Obviously handmade, almost dumpy, Popplewell’s versions are a whimsical anticlimax and for NZ$75 – $95 a pop, you can easily build your own bevy.
