Looking forward – Patrick Pound at Grant Pirrie

Patrick Pound, 'Knife Blocks 1', 2009

Leg of Lamb likes the look of Kiwi artist Patrick Pound’s forthcoming exhibition at Grant Pirrie, Sydney.  The works in Soft Archive knowingly reference the history of photography and a reverence for the New Objectivist photographs of Germans Bernd and Hilla Becher is evident here.

Like them, Pound also utilises the grid, but the industrial forms one associates with the Bechers have been replaced by a series of knife blocks.  Purchased from the same second-hand store over a prolonged period, the photographer acts as collector of both objects and imagery.  Documented by mobile phone, these blocks become elegant, sculptural and even slightly humourous.

Exhibition dates: 11 February – 6 March 2010. Grant Pirrie, 88 George Street, Redfern, Sydney.
