Portrait of Kanye West by George Condo
Portrait of Kanye West by George Condo

“My goal, if I was going to do art, fine art, would have been to become Picasso or greater.”

So says the ever modest Kanye West, in his recent guest lecture at Oxford University.  Read the whole rambling thing online here, including the rather juicy revelation that the video for Kanye’s next single, ‘All Day’  has been shot by none other than film maker and artist Steve McQueen.

I don’t care what anyone says, Kanye is a genius.

Condo for Chrissie

Did you get a Hermès Birkin bag customised by George Condo for Christmas?  No?  Well Kim Kardashian did.  The bag, which retails from anywhere between $7,400 to $150,000  was a gift from her beau Kanye West, who has a longstanding relationship with the painter. In fact, Condo created the cover art for West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.  Whether the bag is to Kardashian’s gaudy taste is hard to say, but her fans certainly disapprove, proclaiming on her Instagram feed that it’s ‘ugly as f*ck’ – tsk!

Jay Z’s ‘performance art film’ for his new single ‘Picasso Baby‘ has now been released.  The footage was gleaned from a 6 hour ‘endurance performance’ by Jay Z at New York’s Pace Gallery that included an audience of celebs, fans and art world heavyweights like George Condo, Lorna Simpson, Lawrence Weiner, Wangechi Mutu,  Andres Serrano and the granddaughter of Picasso himself, Diana Widmaier.  See if you can pick em out in the clip above.

Looking forward – sound performance by Matthew Hopkins

Matthew Hopkins, still from ‘Hypnagogic Reconstruction #1 HEAD’, 2010-2011

To coincide with his current exhibition Heads, Matthew Hopkins is performing with musical collaborator Jonathan Hochman on April 2 at Gallery 9, Sydney.  Their synthesizer drenched industrial sound-scapes will serve as an accompaniment to Hopkins’ new video/sound piece Hypnagogic Reconstruction #1 HEAD.  The artist’s still (above) made Leg of Lamb think of DWARR’s ‘Screams of Terror’ video.  Freaky.

Hopkins is a busy man.  His band, Naked on the Vague, will be playing at the New Museum, New York, as part of the George Condo retrospective on April 14th.
