Biennale of Sydney Announces Theme for 2012

All Our Relations has been announced as the exhibition concept for next year’s Sydney Biennale. Artistic Directors Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster intend to focus on inclusionary art practices of generative thinking, such as collaboration, conversation and compassion.  Working from a collaborative framework, All Our Relations is a departure from previous biennales, with the theme becoming increasingly apparent through process, rather than being imposed on artists (and audiences) from the outset.

Biennale of Sydney announces 2012 Artistic Directors

Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster, Artistic Directors of the 2012 Biennale of Sydney

The Biennale of Sydney has announced a joint Directorship – the first in the organisation’s history – for the 2012 event.   Curators Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster will be the creative force behind the 18th Biennale of Sydney, which opens in June next year.  de Zegher is currently Guest Curator, Department of Drawings, Museum of Modern Art, New York and Visiting Curator, Tàpies Foundation, Barcelona.  McMaster has been the Fredrik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, since 2005.

The pair have worked together before.  They recently participated in the re-installation of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s collection in the renovated museum building by Frank Gehry.  They also co-curated Draw & Tell: Lines of Transformation by Norval Morrisseau/Copper Thunderbird (2001), an exhibition at The Drawing Center in New York.
