A gentle reminder

The video above made by New York artist Dennis Palazzolo and written by Timothy Furstnau has been floating around for some time now (since 2000 in fact) and is still one of my favourites.  It’s sometimes mistaken for a work made by legendary performance artist Vito Acconci, who provided the film’s voice-over in the guise of the MGM lion.  Acconci is an interesting choice of narrator, given his penchant for found poetry, in which the arrangement of words supercedes their meaning.  Here, Palazzolo’s text is key and the message is strong – love life, because one day you’re going to die.
